Shoppers boycott Home Depot over controversial new ‘woke’ policy

Controversy is brewing as a post on social media platform X gains traction, calling for a boycott of Home Depot over what some users deem to be a "woke" policy.

The post, shared by user @EndWokeness, has garnered over 1.2 million views, 18,000 likes, and 4,500 reposts, as it criticizes what the user perceives as "discriminatory" practices by the home improvement giant.

The post features a screenshot of an email from The Home Depot Supplier Communications with the subject line: "Action Required: Supplier Diversity Tier II Spend Reporting."  The email was sent to individuals who have access to The Home Depot's Supplier Diversity Registration (SMDS) tool. The email explains that capturing Tier II spend is crucial for external reporting purposes.

According to the email, The Home Depot has spent over $3 billion per year with diverse suppliers since 2020 and aims to reach $5 billion in Tier 1 and Tier II spend by 2025.

The email aligns with The Home Depot's supplier diversity statement, which states that diverse-owned companies must be U.S.-based and at least 51% owned, controlled, and operated by individuals from various marginalized groups, including women, ethnic minorities, LGBTQ individuals, veterans, and those with disabilities.

Critics of The Home Depot's policy argue that it is discriminatory to exclude any potential business partners, particularly in a challenging economic climate. Some users expressed astonishment that a business would consider factors such as skin color in their decision-making process, especially when there is a shortage of available candidates.
