Research conducted by Steven Camarota at the Center for Immigration Studies further supports these findings. Camarota estimates that illegal immigrants currently receive over $40 billion annually in welfare programs alone, excluding other types of services. This substantial figure highlights the significant financial burden placed on American taxpayers to support indigent migrants.
One of the major expenses associated with illegal immigrants is public education.
Camarota reveals that approximately four million children of illegal immigrants are enrolled in public schools, although many of them are U.S. born. This alone costs a minimum of $70 billion per year. While public education and healthcare represent the largest expenditures, the additional benefits provided to indigent migrants quickly accumulate. Housing, food, legal services, and healthcare for illegal immigrants impose immediate costs that must be covered, and the money inevitably comes from somewhere.
Critics argue, every dollar spent by cities on housing, healthcare, food, and other assistance for illegal immigrants is money that cannot be allocated to support their own residents, particularly low-income individuals who are in dire need of assistance.
